Thank you for writing this and recommending the original essay. My mental health isn’t so well lately, but these philosophical articles that are full of wisdom and motivation, in a sense, have been helping me cope a little better. I strongly think this is a must read for those struggling with self-doubt and irrational fears of failure, or those just looking for a little mental boost :D
It's really great to hear you say this because I feel that you are the exact type of soul that Emerson was writing to reach. This essay wasn't meant for people with an inflated sense of themselves. It was for speaking to us in our darkest moments when we circling our rock bottom and it says to us that greatness is possible if we can liberate ourselves. At least that is what I have felt since I first read it and was coming out of my own dark times. I think when you're in that kind of space you just need to be reminded of the audacity to dream
While I largely agree with everything put forward with regards to how you're laying out Emerson's view of things, I disagree with it in part. I think people have to have a good way of thinking outside of the way society is, I don't think we should completely disconnect ourselves from society, morally speaking. It's important to make sure you have some grounding in how society will view what you're thinking about and your ultimate decision.
For sure, I'm always good with the idea of hearing an argument I don't necessarily agree with. And reexamining of thoughts on the concept. It often gives you a good perspective on yourself.

I absolutely agree. I no longer take Emerson as a whole truth but as long as I take it as partial then I can be buffeted by the rhetorical juice of it
